Changing the design of the breast – 2

Posted by goregt On September - 16 - 2009

My thought process on sculpting any form that I find challenging is to break the design down into simple shapes. Lets take a hand for example, if you break it down into individual shapes the fingers are made up of small cylinders while the palm of the hand is made up of a square. Anyone can sculpt a square and a cylinder so if you think about it anyone can sculpt a very basic design for a hand. If you take it a step further you can also then break your individual parts of the hand into basic shapes. For example, the knuckles are shaped like circles while the fingernails are shaped like small squares. In just a few steps your hand has evolved from a very simplistic design into one that is a little more complex with the addition of the the knuckles and the fingernails. From this point on you just keep refining the individual shapes until you end up with a realistic looking hand. Read the rest of this entry »

Adding Bumps To The Shoulders

OK, I know we have been through this song and dance before but since it is such a catchy tune we are going to sing it just one more time. I liked the way the bumps turned out on the traps and the chest and wanted to blend the same design into the shoulders. The key was to try and create a pattern with my design that didn’t look like I just threw a bunch of balls of clay onto my sculpture. Basically what I did was follow the individual shoulder muscles and placed my pattern in them. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out and have documented the process below.

Filling out the torso

The goal in this lesson is to continue from the previous lesson by building out all the individual shapes that makeup the Fiddlers torso. In this lesson I plan to block out the chest and abdomen areas of the sculpture. The sculpture is still going to be pretty smooth at this stage of the game but this stage is very important for getting the shape of the individual muscles down correctly. All right, now onto the torso.

Again, the polymer clay I am using for this particular piece is Super Sculpey.
